I was reading 2 Chronicles recently, and came to chapter 20, which begins,

It happened after this that the people of Moab with the people of Ammon, and others with them besides the Ammonites, came to battle against Jehoshaphat. 2 Then some came and told Jehoshaphat, saying, “A great multitude is coming against you from beyond the sea, from Syria; and they are in Hazazon Tamar” (which is En Gedi).

Can I get an amen?

Tax season has just begun. Work is sometimes overwhelming. Money has never been tighter, but taxes keep going up. Some people tell us the economy is turning around; others tell us they say that so we’ll spend but the collapse hasn’t even begun.

It sometimes feels like a great multitude is coming against you. Your congregation this weekend, will show up feeling like a great multitude is yapping at their heels.

In 2 Chronicles, however, the king knew what to do.

5 Then Jehoshaphat stood in the assembly of Judah and Jerusalem, in the house of the Lord, before the new court,6 and said: “O Lord God of our fathers, are You not God in heaven, and do You not rule over all the kingdoms of the nations, and in Your hand is there not power and might, so that no one is able to withstand You?

And we all know what we’re supposed to do. The people who show up this weekend are there because they know what they’re supposed to do. Jehoshaphat knew what God could do, might do, probably would do.

But we all need a reminder, an encouragement.

14 Then the Spirit of the Lord came upon Jahaziel the son of Zechariah, the son of Benaiah, the son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, a Levite of the sons of Asaph, in the midst of the assembly. 15 And he said, “Listen, all you of Judah and you inhabitants of Jerusalem, and you, King Jehoshaphat! Thus says the Lord to you: ‘Do not be afraid nor dismayed because of this great multitude, for the battle is not yours, but God’s.

This weekend, you – worship leaders – can be Jahaziel. The Spirit of the Lord is already upon you. Worship is not about pretending our problems and our challenges aren’t there. Worship is about staring our problems in the face and defying their power over us by giving them up to the One who promises to take care of them.

And I love this part:

22 Now when they began to sing and to praise, the Lord set ambushes against the people of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir, who had come against Judah; and they were defeated.

It wasn’t a clever battle strategy or a back-up army at the last minute that won the battle. It was singing and praise. Judah’s armies dressed for battle, armed themselves for battle, showed up for battle, and fought – but not with swords or spears. They sang and they praised God, and their enemies were ambushed.

Our God has said that He is the God who heals, the God who provides, the God who is able to do exceedingly abundantly beyond all we could ask or think. Sing and praise, focus on Him this weekend instead of your problems, and your problems will likely be ambushed.
